Retiring from YouTube

Maintaining a successful YouTube channel is no easy feat, especially with the frequent changes in algorithms affecting viewership. Recently, content creators have voiced concerns over how these shifts influence their channels' performance and engagement.

As I contemplate retirement at the age of 62, many of my peers are either retiring or planning to do so soon. Although this thought hadn't crossed my mind previously, I'm now assessing its feasibility, especially as YouTube evolves.

The algorithm's unpredictability has made reaching my audience challenging. Subscribers report not seeing my videos despite being notified. This situation mirrors a trend I've noticed among other content creators who have decreased their video output, leading to speculation that YouTube may prioritize channels with higher content frequency.

"When the viewership goes down, it makes you think: maybe people are tired of me, or maybe I've run my course—or perhaps it's just the algorithm."

To ensure my content is visible, I've recommended that viewers select 'subscriptions' in their YouTube feed to focus on channels they follow. Additionally, exploring new schedule strategies, like short videos or a mix of content types, might help adjust to the changing platform dynamics.

An essential aspect of my life is creating a balance between work and personal well-being. Reducing my video production from two weekly videos to one has allowed for significant improvements in my personal health and social connections.

Dropping to one video a week was a conscious choice driven by the need for self-care and connecting with friends and family, which had waned due to my intensive work schedule. Maintaining this balance is crucial, especially as I age.

Yet, with YouTube dynamics changing, I consider whether adjusting my content calendar further might help. However, such decisions also weigh against potential burnout and loss of personal time.

Looking ahead, maintaining my channel remains a priority, but so does ensuring that it fits harmoniously within my life. Exploring topics like retirement, expanding content to new subject areas, or integrating more frequent, shorter posts could be part of future strategies.

  • Stay active by leveraging YouTube's subscriptions feature.
  • Explore algorithm-adaptive content strategies.
  • Strive for balanced content output regarding personal health and channel demands.
  • Consider potential new content directions aligned with audience interests.
