CGM Alert: Your Blood Sugar Monitor Is Fooling You? 🚨 #cgm #glucose

Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) offer valuable insights into glucose levels without the need for traditional finger-prick tests. However, it’s essential to grasp what these devices truly measure.

Unlike traditional methods, CGMs do not measure glucose levels directly from the blood. Instead, these devices assess glucose concentration in the interstitial fluid, which is the fluid surrounding your cells. This process typically occurs in areas such as the back of your arm.

The mechanism involves a flexible filament under the skin that reads glucose levels from the fluid between cells. The results are a good proxy for actual blood sugar levels, but with a few caveats.

Two primary factors distinguish CGM readings from those of a standard glucose test: timing and accuracy.

CGMs typically provide data that's delayed by about 20 minutes compared to actual blood glucose levels. This delay means that while monitors offer continuous insights, they aren’t capturing real-time changes.

The readings can also be slightly inaccurate. This becomes more relevant for non-diabetics, as the glucose fluctuations are not as pronounced as for those with diabetes.

Given these limitations, the most effective use of a CGM comes not from fixating on the exact numbers, but by observing patterns.

Pay close attention to the spikes and dips. Identifying larger spikes versus smaller ones can provide actionable insights into your body’s glucose response.

While continuous glucose monitors do not replace traditional blood tests, they offer a meaningful glimpse into glucose trends. For best results, concentrate on the overall patterns rather than exact glucose levels.
